MMA team ranks first in region at physical fitness competition

Two cadets finish on top at YPF competition

Marine Military Academy ranked first in its region at the 5th Annual National Youth Physical Fitness Program Competition. The six-man squad scored the highest in Region 5 – a region that comprises five states. The members of the MMA team were: senior Falco Fematt Rodriguez of Monterrey, Mexico; senior Javier Gil Humphrey of Altamira, Mexico; junior Daniel Lopez Alvarez of Mexico City; junior Dryden Phelps of Waxhaw, N.C.; senior Andres Perez Sepulveda of San Antonio; and junior Jack Thant of Fremont, Calif.

Individually, two MMA cadets came out on top. Lopez Alvarez ranked first in Region 5 while Phelps ranked a tight second.

On March 1, MMA drill instructor MSgt Efren Quilit tested all six athletes in five events: push ups, sit ups, pull ups, 300-yard shuttle run and standing long jump. The scores for MMA were submitted by mail in early March. MMA received the final results for the region on April 9.

The MMA team will go on to compete in the 2014 National High School and JROTC Physical Fitness Championships May 15-17 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

Sponsored by the United States Marines Youth Foundation, the annual YPF event is open to all Marine Corps JROTC units in the nation. The states that fall under Region 5 are Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Southern Mississippi.
