MMA cadet builds flag retirement receptacle for city

Pilcher stands with flag receptacle

The residents of Harlingen now have a place to leave faded and/or tattered U.S. flags thanks to the handy work and sweat of a Marine Military Academy cadet.

Senior Quentin Pilcher of Catonsville, Md., donated a U.S. flag retirement receptacle to the City of Harlingen Oct. 19. Mayor Chris Boswell and City Manager Dan Serna accepted the receptacle on behalf of the community. This indoor, custom-made dropbox will be housed in the Harlingen City Hall lobby.

Pilcher built the flag retirement receptacle for his Eagle Scout community service project. This Boy Scout first had to raise the funds to build the receptacle. Then he assembled a team to build and paint it. The project took several projects, but the well-constructed receptacle should last decades.

Pilcher also put his leftover funds to good use and donated $100 to the Harlingen Humane Society.
