Boy Scouts<\/b> Troop 22 Scouts<\/i> participated in a December campout at the Las
\nPalomas Longoria Unit, a wildlife preserve owned and managed by Texas Parks and
\nWildlife.\u00a0 MMA Scouts<\/u> hold special guest status with the manager, Mr. Sam Patten,
\nwho is a staunch friend and supporter of Boy Scouts.<\/p>\n
Photos outline pack-up and departure, then campsite set-up,
\nwith just minutes of remaining daylight. They ate a hearty supper, main course
\nconsisting of make-it-yourself-sandwiches. Lots of meat, designer cheese, and
\ntheir appetites were satisfied. Of course, no campout is truly complete without
\na nice campfire. Zachary Garner supervised a professional flag retirement
\nceremony. It was very impressive! Then it was marshmallows and cool-aid.<\/p>\n
Two bold Scouts, Henry Frost and Nathan Logan, decided to
\nbegin the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge and undertake requirement #8 (sleep
\novernight in a shelter you construct of natural materials). They completed this
\nparticular requirement, and almost made it the entire night until a late AM
\nrainstorm dumped a fair amount of water on the area.<\/p>\n
Big appetites returned the following morning. Manly ham &
\ncheese omelets made to order made the menu. These omelets were packed with
\nchopped ham and cheese. The Scouts were most delighted to wolf these down with a
\nvengeance! Some boys had more than one. Breakfast was augmented with fresh
\nfruit, cereal, orange juice, and fruit bars.<\/p>\n
All Scouts worked together and met the requirements for the
\nOrienteering Merit Badge. Part of this meant finding your way within the
\npreserve, which is honeycombed with nature trails, mostly paved, some unpaved.
\nLas Palomas is very scenic. Bird and wildlife studies are conducted on the
\nproperty. It is open to the public for bird watching and nature appreciation.<\/p>\n
Scouts consumed a hearty chili-dog and cheese macaroni lunch.
\nThey played\/rested for a bit, then broke camp and returned to campus. Since it
\nwas late afternoon, a trip to McDonalds was in order, where they capped-off a
\nfine event with a famous Mickey D\u2019s combo. It just DOESN\u2019T get any better !!<\/p>\n
