The six-man squad scored the highest in Region 5 \u2013 a region that comprises five states. The members of the MMA team were: senior Falco Fematt Rodriguez of Monterrey, Mexico; senior Javier Gil Humphrey of Altamira, Mexico; junior Daniel Lopez Alvarez of Mexico City; junior Dryden Phelps of Waxhaw, N.C.; senior Andres Perez Sepulveda of San Antonio; and junior Jack Thant of Fremont, Calif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individually, two MMA cadets came out on top. Lopez Alvarez ranked first in Region 5 while Phelps ranked a tight second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 1, MMA drill instructor MSgt Efren Quilit tested all six athletes in five events: push ups, sit ups, pull ups, 300-yard shuttle run and standing long jump. The scores for MMA were submitted by mail in early March. MMA received the final results for the region on April 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MMA team will go on to compete in the 2014 National High School and JROTC Physical Fitness Championships May 15-17 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sponsored by the United States Marines Youth Foundation, the annual YPF event is open to all Marine Corps JROTC units in the nation.
