In fact, the life lessons learned in military school will take you much further in life than a college degree alone. Below are five of the great life lessons you learn in military school.

“If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.” – Lao Tzu

Respect is earned.

Military school students are taught to address adults and individuals in positions of authority with respect and courtesy. They are also taught to treat their peers in the same way they would expect to be treated. Respect for others is not just a way to maintain a civil society. This attitude teaches you to value other people and not just yourself.

Giving respect earns you more respect. To position yourself as a leader in the community or workplace, simply start with the golden rule.

“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.” — Albert Einstein

Good manners make a great impression.

Military schools impress good manners upon their students. “Good morning, sir,” “Yes, ma’am,” “Thank you,” are all really spoken at military schools — and holding the door open for others is also something real! Practicing good manners not only shows you have respect for others, but it instantly makes you come across as refined, professional and compassionate.

Good manners will truly set you apart from your peers and co-workers, and these acts of courtesy will truly open more doors for YOU.

“Friends and good manners will carry you where money won’t go.” — Margaret Walker

Everything can get done with self-discipline.

Self-discipline is a way of life at military schools. In fact, it is the only way students can balance such a busy, 16-hour day and still pass their college-preparatory classes. Self-discipline helps you accomplish more in a day and develop a strong work ethic. Your basic ability to do the things that need to be done (without being reminded) will make you the star of any team, particularly in the workforce.

While it’s great to be smart or talented, your gifts are a waste if you can’t deliver the goods. Self-discipline not only improves you, it empowers you.

“Self-respect leads to self-discipline. When you have both firmly under your belt, that’s real power.” — Clint Eastwood

Failure is the greatest teacher.

At military schools, it is better for a student to try something and fail than not to try at all. Bill Gates, Walt Disney and Henry Ford are just a few famous people who failed in their early business ventures before they become incredibly successful. No one likes the feeling of defeat, but you actually learn more from your failures than your achievements.

Stay in the game, and don’t let any failures crush you. Learn from your mistakes and come back stronger.

“Don’t fear failure. Fear being in the exact same place next year you are today.” — Author Unknown

Tenacity is the key to success.

Perhaps the greatest thing military schools teach is tenacity or perseverance. It’s not enough to set a goal. (That’s the easy part!) It’s more important to have the strength and determination to endure the process, especially when it’s long and hard or you face setbacks. You often hear the phrase “failure is not an option,” but the real intent of that is “giving up is not an option.”

When something gets hard and you feel like quitting, refocus and get some help, or come up with a new plan. Believe in yourself and tap into your grit to finish what you start.

“Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” — Louis Pasteur

Learn More…

To learn more about the benefits of military school read the following:

How Military Schools Motivate Teens to Succeed
The Value of Attending Military School Infographic
Four Reasons To Choose a Military School Education
Military Schools: MMA Can Make the Difference.
Unknown Advantages of Military Schools
Advantages Offered by Military Schools
Military Schools Are They a Good Choice?
Military School Alternative
Military Schools – They’re Not for Troubled Teens
It’s Not Your Fathers Military Academy
5 Common Myths About Military Schools

Marine Military Academy is an all-boys military boarding school located in Harlingen, Texas.
