{"id":12756,"date":"2014-11-03T09:34:24","date_gmt":"2014-11-03T15:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/?p=12756"},"modified":"2021-04-13T14:49:04","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T19:49:04","slug":"understand-early-college-admission-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/12756\/understand-early-college-admission-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Understand Early College Admission Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>What is Early College Admission?<\/h1>\n<p>Early college admission allows high school seniors\u00a0to apply and receive an acceptance letter before the regular admission deadline. \u00a0Application deadlines for early admission programs are at the beginning of \u00a0October and \u00a0 admission decisions are returned by mid-December.<\/p>\n<p>By applying for early admissions you demonstrate a decisive desire to attend a school which may\u00a0<em>slightly<\/em> improve your chances of acceptance. \u00a0 \u00a0You&#8217;ll also receive\u00a0an admission decision\u00a0sooner. \u00a0Instead of waiting until spring for the admission verdict you will know in December. \u00a0This should help to\u00a0reduce your\u00a0&#8220;worry\/stress factor&#8221; and allow you to focus on enjoying\u00a0your senior year. \u00a0Early admissions will also decrease the number of applications you will need to complete. \u00a0Fewer applications means fewer application fees and less time spent filling out forms. \u00a0As a side benefit, if accepted, you&#8217;ll have more time to prepare for your college transition. A binding early admission program is exactly that &#8212; <em>binding<\/em>. \u00a0You agree, that if accepted, you will attend and that you will withdraw all other college applications. \u00a0You should\u00a0be <em>absolutely certain<\/em> of your choice before\u00a0you submit your application. \u00a0If you have not properly researched your school\u00a0or are prone to whimsical, romantic or immature notations regarding that\u00a0school then early decision is probably not a good option for you.<\/p>\n<h2>Is There a Downside to Early Admission?<\/h2>\n<p>The pros and cons of early college admission may not be completely obvious. \u00a0On the pro side, you receive an early admission notification and your chance of admission (if you are strong candidate) may be\u00a0slightly better then if you applied via regular admissions.<\/p>\n<p>On the con side, if financing your college education is a concern then you may want to weigh the early decision option carefully. \u00a0Committing yourself to a single school won&#8217;t allow you the option of selecting the\u00a0school with the best financial aid offer.\u00a0 And, there is little incentive for a school who accepts you for early decision to offer an extensive financial aid package.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t fool yourself into thinking that you are an early admission &#8220;shoe-in&#8221; for your favorite school. \u00a0You might be the &#8220;best and brightest&#8221; student at Podunk High School, \u00a0but everyone else applying early admission is\u00a0likely to be the\u00a0&#8220;best and brightest&#8221; at their high school. \u00a0It will be competitive, so have\u00a0a backup plan ready. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t make the cut you won&#8217;t have much time to meet the regular admission deadlines at other competitive schools.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a short video from US News and World report describing\u00a0early decision programs and\u00a0their implications:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Early Decision vs. Early Action College Advice\" width=\"1290\" height=\"968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-RssnmWXgVU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Who Offers Early Admission?<\/h2>\n<p>There are about 450 colleges that offer early admission plans. \u00a0These schools tend to have\u00a0competitive admissions. Each school&#8217;s early admission plan will be different. \u00a0You&#8217;ll want to take the time to carefully read the requirements and speak to an admission counselor to see if the plan is right for you.<\/p>\n<h2>General Types of Early College Admission Plans<\/h2>\n<p>Colleges offer early admission options\u00a0\u00a0because they can lock-in\u00a0strong students who really want to attend. \u00a0This helps to relieve the stress in the Admissions office\u00a0as they work to meet their &#8220;body-count&#8221; requirements\u00a0for the new Freshman class.<\/p>\n<p>Early admission plans come in three basic flavors: <strong>Early Decision<\/strong>, <strong>Early Action<\/strong> and <strong>Single-Choice<\/strong>. \u00a0 Each school will have their own deadlines;\u00a0most will be before mid-\u00a0November. \u00a0You will like receive an admissions decision by the end of December.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of common attributes for\u00a0each early admission plan:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Decision Plans:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These plans are binding if you are accepted.<\/li>\n<li>There is one &#8220;out.&#8221; \u00a0If the financial aid a school offers you does not meet your needs then you may decline the admissions offer. But, be sure to ask about this.<\/li>\n<li>You can apply to only one early decision plan.<\/li>\n<li>If you are accepted you are required to withdraw all other college applications.<\/li>\n<li>Some schools may offer two\u00a0early decision programs. \u00a0There will be an early decision 1 and early decision 2. \u00a0Early decision 2 has a later application and notification period than early decision 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">As an example, here are descriptions\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/admissions.vanderbilt.edu\/apply\/decision-plans.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vanderbilt <\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/futureowls.rice.edu\/futureowls\/Decision_Plans1.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rice<\/a> University&#8217;s early decision plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Action Plans:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These are not binding plans. You can decline an acceptance.<\/li>\n<li>You can apply to multiple early action colleges.<\/li>\n<li>Some plans will allow you to accept the admissions offer in the spring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">As an example, here are descriptions of\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradocollege.edu\/admission\/application\/firstyear\/early\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado College&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smu.edu\/Admission\/Apply\/FirstYear\/Early%20Decision%20FAQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMU&#8217;s<\/a> early decision and action plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Single-Choice or Restrictive Early Action Plans:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are allowed to apply to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">only one<\/span>\u00a0single-choice early action plan.<\/li>\n<li>If wish, you may to apply to other colleges using regular admissions.<\/li>\n<li>Some plans will give you until the spring to accept their offer of admission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">As an example, here are descriptions\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/admission\/applyingforadmission\/single-choice-early-actio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Princeton\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/admission.stanford.edu\/application\/decision_process\/restrictive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanford University&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0single-choice early action plans.<\/p>\n<p>To summarize, a strong candidate\u00a0who has made a mature decision to attend a particular school can\u00a0take advantage of early admissions opportunities.\u00a0 Doing so will improve their\u00a0chances of admission and reduces the time and expense of applying to other schools. \u00a0Be sure to contact a college admission counselor to learn\u00a0about the details of their early admission programs and what your chances of success might be.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wrapper\" class=\"hfeed\">\n<div id=\"main\">\n<div id=\"container\" class=\"single-page\">\n<div id=\"content\">\n<div id=\"post-12435\" class=\"post-12435 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-college-admissions-counseling\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><em>Jennifer Caballero is the Director of College Guidance at Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX.\u00a0 MMA is <\/em><em>an all boys private college preparatory boarding school.
