It stands out when student shows initiative or commitment to an activity over a period of years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2>Should I take the PSAT, SAT and ACT exams?<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Yes.\u00a0The PSAT is administered each <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegeboard.com\/student\/testing\/psat\/reg\/dates.html\" target=\"_blank\">October<\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/sat.collegeboard.org\/register\/sat-us-dates\" target=\"_blank\">SAT<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actstudent.org\/regist\/dates.html\" target=\"_blank\">ACT <\/a>exams have\u00a0five or six\u00a0testing dates throughout the year.\u00a0\u00a0Students should\u00a0take\u00a0a PSAT as a junior. Doing so is good practice for the\u00a0SAT and may qualify them for\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalmerit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Merit Scholarship<\/a>. \u00a0 The more times a student can take a timed, standardized practice test, the better\u00a0they will perform on the actual SAT and\/or ACT.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">A\u00a0student\u00a0should take\u00a0their first SAT\/ACT at the end of their junior year or, if offered,\u00a0during the summer between your junior and senior years.\u00a0 Some colleges and universities require specific scores on the SAT\/ACT to qualify for admissions. Be aware of these scores and prepared to retake the SAT\/ACT if needed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2>How does a student&#8217;s course selection affect his acceptance into college?<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Colleges want to know that the applicant is \u201ccollege ready\u201d and will successfully complete\u00a0their education. A\u00a0student needs to take the most rigorous courses available to\u00a0them.\u00a0 Acceptance decisions are usually based on the quality of academic preparation in high school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Admission officers at competitive colleges look beyond GPA and test scores and evaluate the pattern of course work, the rigor of classes (Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Credit) and sequence of academic courses. They also look at the senior-year schedule.\u00a0 Admission officers are very aware of the \u201csenior slide.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2>Should I take the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em> hard<\/em><\/span> AP Class and get a &#8220;C&#8221; or the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>easy<\/em><\/span> class and get the &#8220;A&#8221;?<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">You should take the <em>hard<\/em> AP class and get an &#8220;A&#8221;!\u00a0 College admissions can be very competitive. Taking anything but the most advanced course work and making the best grades will put you at a disadvantage. And besides, you are supposed to be preparing for college&#8230; Right?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2>Does the admission application for a service academy differ from that of a college? If so, how?<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Yes. Applying to any of the service academies is extremely competitive. A service academy application is different in that: (a) the application is available the spring semester of the student&#8217;s junior year instead of the fall of the\u00a0student&#8217;s senior year; (b) a\u00a0student \u00a0is required to apply for a nomination from his congressman and\/or senator as well as the vice president; and (c) a cadet must pass a physical fitness test.\u00a0 The only academy not requiring a nomination is the United States Coast Guard Academy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">If admitted, the tuition\u00a0at\u00a0a military academy\u00a0is covered by the United States government. After graduation,\u00a0you become an\u00a0officer in the military and must serve a determined length of time on active duty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2>Are there websites that explain how to get into college?<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">One of the most comprehensive college admissions websites is <a href=\"http:\/\/mystudentedge.com\" target=\"_blank\">mystudentedge.com<\/a>. This website offers career assessments, college major matching, college information, financial aid information, SAT practice tests and information for parents and guardians.
