{"id":11228,"date":"2013-06-03T09:22:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-03T14:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/?p=11228"},"modified":"2015-03-17T13:10:48","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T18:10:48","slug":"physical-fitness-adhd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/11228\/physical-fitness-adhd\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise, Physical Fitness and ADHD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Does Physical Fitness Help Young Men Cope Better with ADHD?<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/summer2.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11162\" title=\"ADHD\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/summer2-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"phyical fitness\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Today there are literally thousands of young men taking various medications for treatment of <b>ADHD<\/b>.\u00a0 Outside of medication there is another treatment that has had a significant amount of research: <strong>physical activity<\/strong>.\u00a0 Although physical activity is not a replacement for medications, in conjunction with medications,\u00a0 it can help young men to better cope with the difficulties of <i>ADHD<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. John Ratey, M.D., an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School states,\u00a0 \u201cThink of it as medication.\u00a0 For a very small handful of people with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ADHD<\/span>, it may actually be a replacement for stimulants, but, for most, it\u2019s complementary- something they should absolutely do, along with taking meds, to help increase attention and improve mood.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0( click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd\/article\/3142.html\">http:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd\/article\/3142.html<\/a>\u00a0 for full article). Physical activity helps to raise the level of certain brain chemicals that effect mood, pleasure, pain, focus and attention normally found at lower levels in persons with ADHD.<\/p>\n<p>While most of us understand the physical benefits of exercise, we rarely consider the mental benefits.\u00a0 Physical activities that focus on problem solving, memorization, sequencing of behavior, teamwork and sustained attention all help to stimulate that portion of the brain most effected by ADHD.\u00a0 Many of the benefits achieved through physical activities can carry over to post activities periods such as classroom or study periods.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/climb4.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9462\" title=\"ADHD\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/climb4-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"adhd\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/climb4-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mma-tx.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/climb4.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In a recent study at Dartmouth, David Bucci, an associate professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, began his study of exercise and memory by looking at attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.\u00a0 He heard from colleagues at the University of Vermont that among kids with ADHD that were attending summer camp, those who participated in team sports tended to respond better to behavioral intervention than sedentary kids.
