Boy Scouts Troop 22 News: Fire Safety Part IV

Boy Scouts Troop 22 Fire Safety Merit Badge: Part IV

SgtMaj Poe

boy scoutsMMA Boy Scouts along with several Boy Scouts from Troop 206 of St. Alban’s continued with the Fire Safety Merit Badge, part 4.

Fire Station 3 of the Harlingen Fire Dept was the destination. Scouts received instruction on how to use a portable fire extinguisher, and fire safety as it pertains to household equipment, such as an outdoor barbecue pit and lawn mower (never gas-up a hot lawnmower!).

Harlingen Mayor and extreme friend of Scouting Mr. Chris Boswell attended (his son is a member of Boy Scouts Troop 206).

Boy Scouts View Fire Station Communications

boy scoutsThe boys received a detailed tour of the facility and learned of the many functions provided by Station 3 professionals. Along with fire-fighting duties, it serves as the primary communications center for Harlingen Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Technicians/Treatment. The center also handles emergency communications for part of Cameron County. The COMM tower directly behind the building juts at least 150 ft into the sky.

Mr. J. C. Casas conducted a very informative session on the many workings of the communications center. It was immediately obvious he’s an experienced communications technician. He’s well-versed in the topic, and proved effective in his instruction to the Scouts. This part of the session was a high privilege, since very few people ever get to inspect the complicated inner workings of a city emergency communications center. The entire event was impressive! Our Boy Scouts deeply appreciated the effort.

Boy Scouts Troop 22 actively seeks donations or other assistance to maintain a quality program. Please contact the Scoutmaster, SgtMajor Jim Poe, at 956-423-6006×270 if you have questions about the Boy Scout program or seek to lend your support.
