Troop 22 News: Cadet Huang Earn Order of Arrow

Boy Scout Michael Huang Earns OA Membership

scout Cadet and Life Scout Michael Huang has earned entry into Scouting’s Order of the Arrow by completing a tough and challenging ordeal weekend designed to test the commitment, discipline, and courage of those nominated for the OA. Cadet Huang has gained honored status and recognition as a newly minted OA member, and has taken his place among ranks of fellow Arrowmen.  The dictionary describes “ordeal” as a severe test. The OA ordeal is characterized by little sleep and food, and lots of hard-labor work facility projects to benefit Camp Perry (the local Scouting camp).

OA Candidates must closely follow directions and are not allowed speak during the ordeal.

Boy Scout Order of the Arrow

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. It uses American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting. The society was created in 1915 as a means of reinforcing the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. The goal was to establish these as lifelong guidelines, and to encourage continued participation in Scouting and camping. Influenced in part by camp traditions, and Indian folklore, the OA uses “safeguarded” symbols, handshakes, and ceremonies to impart a sense of community.

scoutInducted members, known as Arrowmen or Brothers, number more than 180,000 youth and adults. They are organized into local youth-led lodges that harbor fellowship, promote camping, and render service to Boy Scout councils and their communities. Members wear identifying insignia on their uniforms, most notably the OA sash, and are eligible for special OA awards. The OA program sponsors several events, awards, and training functions.

 Cadet Huangs Scout OA Ordeal

Cadet Huang has long been recognized as a high achieving Cadet and Boy Scout. He was unanimously voted-in by his peers as an OA candidate. He gladly sacrificed liberty this past weekend to assume and complete the ordeal challenge. He even said he enjoyed the event! His positive attitude and commitment to personal excellence continues to impress the student body and staff of MMA.

A hearty congratulations to Cadet Michael Huang!
