13 WWII veterans attend Iwo Jima Parade

Thirteen World War II veterans, eight of which fought at Iwo Jima, attended the Marine Military Academy Iwo Jima Parade Feb. 18. As in years before, at least 300 people turned out for the parade, but this year had the highest turnout for World War II veterans in several years. One Iwo Jima survivor even traveled from out of state to attend the parade.

The parade was particularly exciting as the MMA Leatherneck Band performed “Walkin’ on the Sun” with the addition of an electric guitar and a percussion section. The MMA cannon was also fired.

When it all ended, many parade-goers stayed to shake the hands of the World World II veterans. The 13 veterans ranged from age 93 to 99.
