MMA October 2020 President’s Letter

letter head

21 October 2020

Dear MMA Parents/Guardians,

I pray that you are all safe and well.  Your Cadets are doing great.  They just celebrated the halfway point for completing the fall academic semester.  I am pleased to report that the overall academic progress has improved in all the Companies. Some of our seniors have already received early acceptance to the College of their choice including academic scholarships/grants.

The Cadets remain in high spirits and are demonstrating great resilience.  I am also pleased to inform you that we have had no cases of COVID-19 among our Cadets.

Last Thursday evening we celebrated Senior Night at our football game.  Although this is an outdoor activity, we are required by the County to wear masks whenever we cannot socially distance from one another.  Given that requirement the Corps of Cadets wore masks as did all spectators.  We created a socially distanced gap of over six feet between where all the Cadets were seated and the spectators.  Even with such protocols, the Cadets and the spectators enjoyed a wonderful evening of honoring the Senior Athletes and Band Members at Marine Military Academy (MMA).

Earlier this week we had a Corps wide brunch, a field meet with outdoors competitions, and we capped it off with an incredible steak dinner provided by a generous donor.

The boys are back into the grind of academics but have Octoberfest and Trunk or Treat activities to look forward to later this month.

This school year continues to be amazing and something special.  Why?  Because despite the restrictions of COVID-19, your young man is flourishing at MMA.  I want each young man here to know they are valued and that they hold tremendous worth.  We instruct our students to have “Honor, Courage, Commitment.” We believe in fresh-starts and new beginnings.  We believe in growth and potential.  And we have faith in bringing everyone together to accomplish success.

I know some of you have already started planning for your son’s return during Christmas break.  As you may know airline travel has become difficult with scheduling and cancelations.  For planning purposes, we are going to start exams on Tuesday 8 December through Thursday 10 December.   We ask that you do not plan any flights before Thursday evening on 10 December.  Please coordinate your Cadet’s travel plans with his Drill Instructor.  We will ensure that they are kept busy and well cared for until each Cadet is able to depart safely even if that means staying through the weekend.  I know it will have been a long time for many of you since you have seen your Cadet but please adhere to this timeline so that each Cadet can successfully complete their academic obligations.

We value our supportive parents and guardians and your opinions. We look to you as a partner in your child’s education.  Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
