Troop 22: Cadet Hellmund Eagle Scout Service Project BEGINS!

Life Scout and Troop 22 member Guillermo Hellmund began his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project over this past weekend (Sept 20-21). A trip to the local Lowe’s on Friday to select and purchase the required support items was first on the agenda. Trevor Hankes (troop member & volunteer) accompanied. Upon departure from Lowe’s, the boys insisted on a detour to a famous “What-a-Burger!” location, where they successfully quenched teenage boy dinner appetites.

Life Scout Hellmund is supporting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in fulfilling a request to manufacture 10 Game Bird Hunting Permit boxes. His team will then install these at various wildlife sites around the Rio Grande Valley. A transparent Plexiglas sleeve will be affixed to the front. It will contain blank permits to be documented by hunters, then inserted into the box. These sites will collect information that allows for the tracking of hunter use and game harvest (numbers of birds killed). This method provides the information needed for TPWD to determine how units are utilized, high & low. It will provide wildlife managers the data needed for greater asset planning accuracy, and show where to focus habitat management attention as it pertains to upland game birds.

Guillermo then recruited a fine team of Scouts for work on Saturday. It was immediately evident these boys were fueled by motivation and Scout Spirit! They worked long hours in the campus carpentry shop, and made significant headway.

The leadership service project is one of the final hurdles in earning the coveted title of Eagle Scout, per the directives of the National Council of Scouting:

“While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community. (The project must benefit an organization other than Boy Scouting.) The project plan must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort, your Scoutmaster, troop committee, and the council or district before you start.”

This project offers challenge due to the size, scope, and levels of accuracy required for professional results. Seems Guillermo Hellmund is the right young man to lead the task, as he has proven to be an individual who embraces difficulty with a determined smile and a “can-do easy!” attitude.

Stay tuned for part two!
