Military School Band

The Marine Military Academy band is an integral part of our school, and provides support for a variety of events that are essential to our military program.

The Leatherneck Band is comprised of musicians of all levels. The band provides members with an environment that reinforces teamwork, critical analysis and increased awareness of self-image, as well as enables cadets to engage multiple intelligences.

MMA Ambassadors

The MMA band performs daily for the pass in review sequence, leading the Corps of Cadets as they march for review prior to the lunch hour, as well as for every special event that includes a parade.

Additionally, the band travels throughout the southern region of the United States serving as an ambassador for MMA and performing in both competitive and non-competitive events, such as the annual Mardi Gras celebrations in Lafayette, Louisiana.

MMA color guard

The Marine Military Academy drill team and color guard carry historical significance and are integral to our military heritage.

Both units perform at all cadet parades, as well as compete in three to six military skill meets throughout the year.

Drill Team

The MMA drill team exemplifies incredible discipline, teamwork and proficiency as it performs complex maneuvers of close order and exhibition drills with 10-pound M-14 rifles — all without the sound of commands.

Color Guard

The MMA color guard, aptly named after the unit’s display of both the National and Academy colors, appears at a wide variety of civic events throughout the school year adding dynamic flair through synchronized marching and spinning of flags and rifles.

Eligibility

All cadets are welcome to try out for the drill team or color guard at the beginning of the fall semester and again at mid term. However, in order to qualify, participants must show a reasonable amount of manual dexterity, balance and concentration.

The Raider Team competes against other Texas JROTC units in fitness challenges in the following events: running, pull-ups, push-ups, crunches, tire flips, fireman’s carry, rope climbing, rope bridges, land navigation, obstacle courses, and confidence courses.

MMA Rifle Team at a marksmanship meet

The purpose of the Marine Military Academy marksmanship program is to educate cadets on the principals of rifle safety and responsibility, including steady position, sight alignment and trigger and breath control.

Both our junior and varsity teams practice five days a week in our indoor and outdoor ranges, among the finest in the nation, in order to prepare for JROTC and state competitions respectively.

Our varsity team focuses on shooting with air and pellet rifles, while our junior varsity team practices refining the three basic shooting positions: prone, standing and kneeling.

Clubs

As part of our commitment to molding young men into well-rounded members of society, we offer a variety of community-oriented clubs that promote leadership, responsibility, and respect — for others as well as oneself. Our wide variety of clubs include:

MMA Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts of America provides a program for young men that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

The MMA Troop 22 Boy Scout Program further reinforces the academy’s mission of forging future leaders. This rewarding experience provides cadets with the opportunity to hone leadership and camping skills, earn over 120 individual merit badges, consistently advance in rank and share in strengthening bonds with fellow Scouts.

MMA Troop 22

This is a quality program where memories are made and valuable skills for the future are developed. Nearly one fourth of the MMA Corps of Cadets are registered members of Troop 22, which serves to guide them down the path to the highly coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Our focus is a fast-track plan to Eagle Scout for the motivated young man in a positive environment.

Troop Activities

Other traditional Scouting events and activities are planned for the enjoyment of our Scouts, such as Eagle Scout Leadership Service Projects, flag ceremonies and monthly campouts, which are conducted at various locations around the Rio Grande Valley. Read about many of their activities on MMA News and Views.

Troop 22 meets every Tuesday evening, where the boys attend merit badge classes, work on advancement requirements or attend an occasional presentation by a guest speaker.

Membership dues of $50 per Scout per semester are charged to the parent/guardian.

MMA chess club

The Marine Military Academy's chess club welcomes both experienced players and novices who want to compete in tournaments and events throughout the year.

Players learn basic chess moves, USCF tournament rules, and according to skill level, advanced chess strategies and tactics.

Those wanting to compete in tournaments are expected to attend practice sessions and commit to a minimum number of competitions. Tournaments are held on Saturdays and, occasionally, on Sundays.

MMA CyberPatriot Team

CyberPatriot is the premier national high school cyber defense competition created to inspire students toward careers in cyber security and other disciplines deemed critical to the United States’ future.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) course instruction is highlighted as an integral part of the competition.

The Competition

The cyber defense competition, which was pioneered by the Air Force Association in 2009, tests students’ abilities to detect and solve simulated network security vulnerabilities, as well as prevent against further intrusions. MMA is represented in the All Service Division, reserved for JROTC and CAP Units, along with 1225 other national schools. Read about the results of the competition in March 15, 2013 on MMA News and Views.

Marine Military Academy has a rich tradition of developing leaders and is expanding that into the engineering field. Throughout the year, the Engineering & Robotics Club will tackle various projects that involve robotics, alternative energy (solar and wind), agriculture, software and other engineering fields. In this club, cadets learn how to combine their creative and analytical skills to build functioning devices.

Led by the chaplain along with our cadets, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Ministry effectively couples community service projects, camps, retreats, special events and Bible studies to offer the cadets a unique opportunity to grow and mature, learn, be challenged and experience God working in and through them.
