2002 Alumni Reunion Packed With Activities, Events

Seeing old friends and the new campus were just two of the reasons MMA alumni returned to the Academy, 5-7 April for the 2002 Alumni Reunion.

Nearly 60 former cadets from across the United States and Mexico made the trip back to their alma mater, some who had graduated just last year, and others who go back to the earliest days of the Academy.

“Wow!” was just one of the thoughts expressed by James “Jimmy” Windham, class of ’82, who had not been back to MMA since his graduation. Windham, now living in Austin, Texas stated that “the only original buildings I recognize are the barracks. All the other buildings around campus are new and very nice. I am amazed at how great the campus looks.”

Another graduate from the class of ’82, Robert Baker, who now resides in Houston, echoed those same sentiments. “It is an honor and a privilege to be here with all of my MMA brothers.” He added that “I hardly recognized the place. Everything is so updated. It’s good to see that after all these years the Academy is still here and growing, and I’m proud to call myself a graduate of the Marine Military Academy.”

Todd Lemke, class of ’82, said coming back to MMA was “like a homecoming.” He asked “Where did the time go?” Lemke noted that “there seems to be less tension around the Academy, and that things are smoothing over and that there is a bright future ahead for the Academy and the cadets. Lemke now lives in Muskegon, Michigan

The reunion began Friday morning, when alumni gathered at Peacher Memorial Cadet Activites Center for registration and tours of the campus.

For the noon pass in review, alumni formed up to lead the Corps of Cadets down Battalion Street and into the Neuhaus Mess Hall. That afternoon, several alumni spoke to the graduating seniors in the Cadet Activities Center and also presented alumni lapel pins to them. Other alumni addressed the underclassmen in an assembly held in Yeckel Auditorium, relaying the importance of an education at the Academy.

Traditionally, the alumni are honored by an evening parade by the Corps of Cadets, but due to inclimate weather, the parade was cancelled. However, a special presentation of a case of medals belonging to MGySgt Wolf was made to the Academy by MGySgt’s brother in Yeckel Auditiorium.

Afterwards, a tree dedication ceremony and presentation of a plaque honoring MGySgt Wilmot (Bill) Wolf, MMA’s first drill instructor, was held in the Memorial Gardens.

Before returning to the Cadet Activities Center for a reception with General Rollings, faculty and staff, the alumni paused for a brief moment at the Iwo Jima Memorial for a group photo session. The reception was a time for alumni, faculty and staff to catch up and reminisce about the past.

Saturday morning activities began with a business meeting held at the CAC, with General Rollings giving an update of the Academy and future activities and projects planned.

Unfortunately, the much anticipated “Annual Alumni-Cadet” softball game was canceled due to rain; however, many alumni and their wives took that time to visit the rifle range and shoot a few rounds.

Saturday evening activities included a reception and buffet dinner held at the Harlingen Country Club. Entertainment was provided by two graduates from the class of ’82. Robert Baker provided music for the crowd, while C.J. Johnson, a noted hypnotist and magician, performed a few of his magic tricks. He enlisted the help from the audience, and everyone seemed to enjoy his performance.

After the dinner, SgtMaj W.E. Steigerwald officially announced his retirement, and turned over the duties of the Director of Alumni Affairs to GySgt Larry Wisnoski. GySgt “Ski”, as most people know him, stated that he “is looking forward to working with all the alumni, and hope they keep in touch with him and with each other.” He reminded everyone that he expects to see them all back, but especially in 2004, when the Academy will be celebrating its 40th anniversary.

All agreed that “Alumni Reunion 2002” was a great weekend despite the rain, and will be back again.

Charlie "Tremendous" Jones, Noted Author and Executive, Entertains and Enlightens Cadets

On 20 March 2002, Mr. Charles E. “Tremendous” Jones came to the Academy to address the Corps of Cadets, faculty and staff.

In addition to serving as President of Life Management Services, Inc. and Executive Books, Mr. Jones travels around the world conducting leadership seminars for companies such as IBM, Xerox, 3M, and Sperry Rand. His whole mission is to get into the spirit and heart of individual men and women, and offer the ability to have a tremendous life.

For fifty years, thousands of audiences in America, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia have experienced nonstop laughter as Mr. “Tremendous” shares his ideas about life’s most challenging situations in business and at home.

Sharing his thoughts with the cadets, Mr. Jones was not only informative and educational, but entertaining as well. His 60-minute speech, entitled “Where Does Leadership Begin” focused on three aspects of leadership. He explained that “leading begins with (1) making a decision; (2) making that decision your own decision and (3) living with your decision.”

First-year cadet Ryan Willis of Redland, California noted that “Mr. Jones was a dynamic speaker without parallel. His comical down-to-earth method of discussing leadership made him easy to understand and identify with.” Willis also noted that “ his love of good books encouraged me to start looking for answers to my own problems within books.”

Mr. Jones is the author of “Life Is Tremendous—7 Laws of Leadership”, with more that 2,000,000 copies in print. He is also a charter member of the prestigious Speakers Roundtable and recipient of the C.P.A.E. Award for speaking skills and professionalism from the National Speakers Association, West Shore Chamber of Commerce, International Platform Association, Gideons, and Christian Businessmen’s Committee.

Mr. Jones now resides in Mechanicsburg, PA with his wife, Gloria. They have six children and six grandchildren.

Third Gunnery Sergeant James Morton Memorial Scholarship Fund Reception and Dinner Held

On 27 March, the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA served as a most memorable location for the gathering of over 400 individuals, many of whom were introduced to the Marine Military Academy for the first time.

At the helm and serving as chairpersons for the gala event were MMA Trustee Anthony J. McIntyre (MMA, 1975) (USAR) and his gracious wife Christine McIntyre. Cadets David Krauss, Geoffrey Braun, Austin Aitken, and Alberto Pina served as the Academy Color Guard for the event. They were able to spread the word on the MMA experience and were recipients of numerous accolades.

The dinner honors Gunnery Sergeant James Morton, USMC , Ret. (1931-1995) who touched many cadets as a Drill Instructor, leader, mentor, and coach in his 25 years of service to the Marine Military Academy. Honorary Guest speakers were General Alfred M. Gray, USMC (Ret) and U.S. Representative Curt Weldon (R-PA).

Additionally, General Wayne E. Rollings presented a painting entitled “American Symbols of Freedom” to Mr. McIntyre for taking the lead in sponsoring the dinner..

A special thanks for supporting and attending to all new members of the MMA family from the greater Philadelphia area, Semper Fidelis.

James E. Warren Jr. Obstacle Course Dedication

On Friday, 15 February, a formal dedication was held at the Marine Military Academy Obstacle Course.

The Obstacle Course was dedicated in honor of Mr. Jim Warren, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, for his vision, drive and selfless support in the fundraising and construction of the obstacle course.

Mr. Warren had envisioned for some time having such a course at the Academy, and in February of 2000, pledged the funding for its construction.

The course was completed in time for campers to run it for the first time during Summer Camp 2000. Cadets over the last two years have enjoyed this facility, as well.

Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps and Silent Drill Team

Once again, the Marine Military Academy hosted the U.S. Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps and the Silent Drill Team, performing for the Corps of Cadets and the general public at Bowman Stadium.

Unfortunately, because of the weather, there were not as many spectators this year as in the past; however, the USMC Battle Color Ceremony was, as always, very impressive and the audience and cadets really enjoyed them.

The program, “Music in Motion,” began with outstanding music and marching from the U.S. Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps. They played beautifully arranged contemporary songs and traditional marching music, all the while performing uniquely choreographed drill movements.

Then, members of the Silent Drill Platoon took center stage with a dazzling exhibition of precision drill with M-1 rifles. Ten-and- one-half-pound rifles were twirled and tossed with ease, while not one command was made during the drill performance.

The program concluded with a pass in review and the presentation of the Battle Color. Serving as reviewing officer was MajGen Wayne E. Rollings, USMC (Ret), and President of the Academy.

General Rollings was accompanied by Mr. Dick Moore of Chicago, Illinois.

You Can Make A Difference For Summer Camp 2002

Each year, the Admissions Department receives numerous applications from young boys who want to experience the adventures of Summer Camp.

A number of these individuals can’t afford to pay the full cost for attending Summer Camp. LtCol Bob Grider and the Admissions Staff appeal to readers such as you to contribute to the Summer Camp Fund.

By raising money to help offset the cost of Summer Camp, 10 to 20 young boys can realize their dreams. In many instances, this will be the one opportunity that makes a difference in their life.

If every person who reads this and then sends a $25.00 to $50.00 donation, they will be contributing to the youth of tomorrow.

Please consider being a part of this worthwhile investment. If you decide to contribute to this endeavor, please send your check to the Admissions Department at the Marine Military Academy and annotate for Summer Camp Fund. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Dean Meier Takes New Position in Vermont

The faculty, staff and Corps of Cadets of the Marine Military Academy wishes all the best for Dean Neil Meiers, who recently left the Academy after serving seven years in the position of Dean of Academics and Geopolitics professor. Assistant Academic Dean John Butler will be taking his place as Dean.

Meiers, who will be living in Vermont, has taken the position of Executive Assistant to Dr. Judith Sturnick, President of the Union Institute and University. Union Institute has offices in Cincinatti, Ohio and Mont Pelier, Vermont.

Meiers’ primary role with the Union Institute will be to coordinate the activities of the President in areas of development, marketing and student relations.

When asked what he would like to be best remembered by, Meiers jokingly remarked “my Rah! Rah!” On a more serious note, he stated that “putting the cadet at the center of academics was always my focus. I am especially proud of the fact that during my term as dean, we went from having only two advanced placement classes to nine now.”

One of the most memorable moments for Meiers was when he “won” the opportunity to kiss a pig for the United Way. He stated that “we doubled the quota that year and the cadets were most supportive in enthusiasm and in their contributions.”

In addition to his new position, Meiers will be getting married in the fall to Dr. Gayle Myers, of Georgia, Vermont.

MMA Band Leads Mardi Gras Parades

Once again the MMA Marching Band traveled to Lafayette, Louisiana, for their annual Mardi Gras celebrations. For the past several years, the cadets of the Marine Military Academy Marching Band have been asked to lead the two final parades of the celebration.

This year, the band featured several individual members of the band throughout the two parades. The two parades totaled over 13 miles. One of the popular songs of the parade that got the audience clapping along was an old Mardi Gras favorite called “Basin Street Blues” which featured cadets Alan Holt, Matthew Burns, Dennis McKenna, Clayton Duncan and Andrew Haynes in a traditional Dixieland group. However, this year the band had a crowd stopping surprise up their sleeves. Several times throughout the parades the band stopped and really got the audience involved with Cab Calloway’s “Minnie the Moocher” as Drum Major Cadet Staff Sergeant Travis Green got the crowd to sing along with the other band members.

As the MMA Band marched through the streets of Lafayette, they were often greeted by parade watchers yelling such phrases as, “God Bless You,” “We Love You” and even signs reading “Welcome Back MMA Band.” It was estimated by parade officials that there were over 600,000 people on the parade route on both Monday night and Tuesday morning.

It is truly a place of honor to lead these parades, especially considering that the MMA Band is the only out of town band to participate and there are only five bands in the parades each day.

The cadets of the MMA Band really look forward to this trip each year and are proud to be the “ambassadors” of the Marine Military Academy. Plans are already underway for a repeat performance next year.

Since returning from Mardi Gras in Lafayette, Louisiana, the Band has kept a busy schedule, with several performances leading up to Spring Break.

On Saturday, 16 February, the Band traveled down to Brownsville to play for the Paseo Resaca “Celebrating America” Concert and Fireworks. It was a great performance by the band, in a very nice courtyard setting. After their performance, the band led the audience to a location close by for the fireworks. It was a very patriotic event that is being planned for next year as well.

The very next Tuesday saw the Band participating in the Academy’s annual recognition of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Immediately following the parade, the Band, Drill Team and Color Guard boarded buses and went to Fun & Sun R.V. Park in San Benito. With a crowd of over 300 people from all over the United States, the Drill Team, Color Guard and Band gave a performance that was absolutely flawless and exciting.

Immediately following their performance, Major General Rollings addressed the crowd. This is one of several annual performances for the local area that the Band looks forward to every year.

One of this year’s special treats for the Band was going the Casa de Amistad, a local auditorium, to watch the Glenn Miller Orchestra perform. This was a great opportunity for the Band to see a great American treasure. A big “thank you” goes out to Mrs. Folsom for getting our cadets to these performances.

Cadets Perform Reenactment of Flag Raising

Recently, the Marine Military Academy was asked to participate in a dedication ceremony for the Harlon Block Memorial Park, a new city park built in the town of Weslaco, Texas. Harlon Block, from Weslaco, was one of the men depicted in the Iwo Jima Monument.

The band and the color guard performed during the ceremony. MajGen Wayne E. Rollings, USMC (Ret) and President of MMA, addressed the crowd of approximately 200 people. After his words, cadets Xavier Anderson, Ryan Duggan, Patrick Kenny, Jorge Montemayor, Michael Parker and Simon Safir performed a reenactment of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. The audience was visibly moved by this, and many hoped that this would become an annual event.

MMA Leatherneck Cheerleading Up-Date

The Leatherneck cheerleading squad has added some new faces to their squad since the beginning of the year.

Our current yell leaders are Charlie Vige, Robert Shields and Evan Howington from Alpha Company; Andy Poor, Donald Hudson, Travis Green and Jason Berry from Bravo Company; Josh Acevedo and Paul Carruth from Delta Company and Emmanuel Gonzalez from Golf Company. Corbin Hale, a freshman from Alpha Company serves as the mascot.

After dedicating a long season of cheering and supporting MMA football, swimming, VISA, basketball and other sports, the squad is preparing for a competition of their own! CheerFest 2002 will be held April 27th in Houston's Astroworld.

The squad will be competing in the very competitive, large co-ed division. They have worked hard this year, and are sure to perform very well and place at the top of their division.

Cheerfest 2002 will be attended by many and is a great opportunity for cadets to interact and represent the Academy doing something they enjoy.

Academy Hosts A Mardi Gras Dance

On Saturday, 9 February, the cadets and their guests were treated to a night of fun and dancing “Mardi Gras” style in the Peacher Memorial Cadet Activity Center!

Everyone was given a special treat when the MMA Band made a special appearance at the dance. Drum major Travis Green led a small jazz section of the band onto the main floor area and played three Mardi Gras classics for all to enjoy. As the band performed, a second surprised followed. A group of masked partygoers paraded their way to the upper area of the main floor and began tossing beads to the crowd.

Patty Cavazos encouraged Col. Hill, Hanne Lunday, Debra Poe, Nancy Royce, Denice Bryan, LtCol Lewis and Jackie Kyger to dress up and participate in the festivities. All seemed to have had a great time, wearing feathered masks, jester hats and flinging beads in the air.

At the end of the night, it was time to crown a Mardi Gras King and Queen. The judges decided to crown the couple that danced all night, with great energy and grace. They were Golf company cadet Emmanuel Gonzalez and MMA cheerleader, Kristen Poe.

Big thanks goes out to the parents and staff who attended and chaperoned the dance, as well as to the parents who brought pizza and treats for the cadets. Your generosity is always appreciated!

A special “thank you" goes to Sharon Hutchinson, Stephanie Spencer and Victor Alvarez for providing plenty of wonderful Mardi Gras beads and decorations.

As a reminder, the Junior/Senior Ring Dance will be held on Saturday, 13 April, 7 - 11 p.m. Formal dress for ladies and dress blues bravo for cadets. As always, parents are encouraged to attend.

Construction Begins on COPE Course

MajGen Wayne E. Rollings turned the first shovel of earth on 29 March to mark the start of construction on the MMA COPE Course.

The course will feature six high events and completion is expected before Summer Camp 2002.

A COPE Course at the Academy has been a dream for over a year and now we look forward to having cadets run it this summer.

Cadets Receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Award

The Good Citizens Award and the Patriotism Award were recently announced and awarded to two deserving cadets during a special ceremony held at the Harlingen Public Library.

The Good Citizens Award is an annual award that is presented by Harlingen’s Lieutenant Thomas Barlow chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to a Marine Military Academy cadet who best epitomizes dependability, leadership, service and patriotism. Cadet Capt Lucius Clay Spencer IV was selected for this award. He received a certificate from the Academy President MajGen Wayne E. Rollings, USMC (Ret), as well as receiving a pin, certificate, and wallet recognition card from the DAR during their annual ceremony conducted on 16 February.

Cadet Spencer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Clay Spencer, III of New Orleans, LA. Cadet Spencer is a second-year cadet who entered MMA during the fall semester of 2000. He plans to attend Tulane University in New Orleans.

Additionally, the Patriotism Award is an annual award presented by Harlingen’s Lieutenant Thomas Barlow chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). This award goes to the most accomplished 8th grader at MMA. Recipients of this award exemplify superior performance in academic, military, athletic, and community endeavors.

Cadet PFC David A. Miller received this year’s award. He also received a certificate from the MajGen Rollings, along with a medal from the DAR during the ceremony.

Cadet Miller is the son of Sergeant Major and Mrs. David A. Miller of Harlingen, TX. Cadet Miller is a first-year cadet who entered MMA during the fall semester of 2001.

Relay For Life Rummage Sale

The National Honor Society wishes to extend a “BIG THANK YOU” to all who contributed to the Relay for Life Rummage Sale held at the Academy on 2 March. They raised $1025.00 for the American Cancer Society. This doubles their total $520 from last year’s sale.

“This is only the beginning! Last year MMA raised $2,688.00 for the American Cancer Society,” stated Mrs. Diolanda Dye, coordinator of the event. “There is still a chance for you to help us beat this total. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to the American Cancer Society and write MMA on the memo space.”

The actual relay will be held on April 5 & 6, with members of the NHS and other cadets participating in the relay.

Rotary Shrimp Boil

BOY SCOUTS from MMA’s Troop 22 helped out the Rotary Clubs of Harlingen and San Benito during their annual Shrimp Boil.

MacArthur Award Winner Announced

Cadet LtCol and Battalion Commander Andre O. Testman, II, a three-year cadet at MMA, has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the prestigious General Douglas MacArthur Award. The selection is made at the Academy by a panel of Military Department personnel, and is give to the senior cadet who demonstrates the most soldierly performance when considering the qualities of academics, athletics and leadership.

The award is sponsored by the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation and is given at all JROTC-sponsored schools throughout the country. Its objective is to encourage students to emulate and practice the qualities shown by Douglas MacArthur as a cadet at the West Texas Military Institute and West Point Academy.

For winning the award, Testman received a $50 cash award, a replica of one of the general’s medals and a copy of his book, Reminiscences.

Cadet Testman, a member of MMA’s Boy Scout Troop 22 , recently completed his requirements for Eagle Scout and is also a member of the National Honor Society. He is the son of Mr. Andre O. Testman of San Diego, California. Cadet Testman plans to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Tennis

P.S.J.A. Invitational Tournament

The Marine Military Academy Varsity

Tennis Team traveled to Pharr, Texas to play in the P.S.J.A. Invitational Tennis Tournament.

Ted Vandernaillen, Jose Franco Perez, and Jose Humberto Perez represented MMA in this tourney. All three boys played singles.

Cadet Vandernaillen and Franco Perez both won in the first round and played state ranked players in the second round. Cadet Vandernaillen lost a close match, 6-4, in the third set.

MMA was represented well in its first meet.

Brownsville Invitational Tournament

The Leatherneck Tennis Team played in a Brownsville tournament recently with 12 other Valley 5-A and 4-A schools.

Leatherneck participants and their results were: Jose Garcia and Jose Sotomayor (doubles); Jose Perez and Ruben Bordes (doubles, 1st round win); Ted Vandernaillien and Jose Perez (doubles, consolation finals); Ted Vandernaillien (singles, 1st round win).

Golf

Progreso Invitational Tournament

The MMA Golf Team kicked off its season, taking part in the 3rd Annual Progreso Invitational Tournament. The Leathernecks took second place as a team.

Members of the team included: Memo Montemayor, Kyle Jones, David Mackie, Jose Martinez and David Square.

Individuals who also competed at the tournament were: Beau Flowers, Justin Stanton, and Christopher Vega.

Medallist honors went to Kyle Jones for 3rd place honors.

Lyford Invitational Tournament

The Leathernecks, taking part in the Lyford Invitational on Friday, 22 February, at the Treasure Hills Country Club in Harlingen, took home the first place trophy.

The MMA team was one of eight that participated in the tournament.

Members of the team and their scores Jose Martinez (82), Kyle Jones (87), David Mackie (89), David Square (90) and Memo Montemayor (98).

Individual honors, swept by the MMA golf team, were: 1st place - Jose Martinez; 2nd place - Kyle Jones and 3rd place - David Mackie.

Harlingen South Tournament

Once again, the MMA Golf Team won first place at the Harlingen South Tournament held at the Treasure Hills Country Club in Harlingen.

Congratulations also go out to the Leatherneck 2nd team for placing 7th among a field of 10 teams.

Team members who took part in the two-day tournament were: David Mackie (80) (89), Jose Martinez (81) (91), Guillermo Montemayor (86) (87), Kyle Jones (82) (92) and David Square (94) (98).

Second team members also participating were: Beau Flowers (90) (112), William Enderlin (96) (94), Justin Stanton (108) (98) and Christopher Vega (115) (112).

Individual honors went to David Mackie, as he took 3rd place medallist among a field of 60 players.

Track and Field

The Leatherneck track and field squad competed at the Santa Rosa Relays recently, earning top honors in capturing the first place title out of seven Valley 3-A teams.

Judo Team Wins State High School Judo Tournament

The MMA Judo Team did superbly Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Salvation Army Community Center in Pasadena Texas.

The tournament started with the presentation of colors by the Marine Military Academy Judo Team, in front of a crowd of over 200 spectators and competitors. The entire tournament, the presentation of colors and the trophy and medal presentations were televised by ABC-TV affiliate Channel 13 during the 6:00 evening news in Houston and the surrounding areas.

The Leathernecks came home with the state of Texas “Team Trophy,” as well as numerous individual medals. Of the nine high school Judo teams registered throughout the state of Texas, the Leathernecks posted the most wins through serious mat action and throws.

Coached by Sensi (7th degree Black Belt) Charles Robertson and supported by Cadet Major Sean DuBose, the Leatherneck team fought over 20 matches to bring home the title of #1 High School Judo Team in the state of Texas.

After long battles on the mats, the MMA Judo Team continued to participate on the mats in a local State sanctioned tournament, hosted in Houston by the Houston Judo Organization of Diamondback Judo. The Leathernecks achieved the following medals at that local tournament, fighting in both junior and senior novice divisions:

I have fond memories of the many cadets who have passed through MMA. They will remain with me all my days.

My love and affection for MMA Alumni is close to the heart. They have treated me well, been good to me, very much like members of a loving family.

Now as Col Tom Parsons, former MMA Cmdt told me: “SgtMajor, take time to smell the roses.” It is that time.

Gy Ski is tailor made for the job of Alumni Affairs Director, with his experience, knowledge of what MMA does and is about. He probably knows more Alumni than anyone, as well as all current and past employees.

Ski has a keen sense of humor; attention to detail; and in true Marine fashion, dedicated and conscientious as they come. I have never met anyone who did not like and love Ski. He will stir the pride and spirit of our Alumni. Being full time, will get much done.

I will help and assist him any way or fashion he asks of me. Alumni can best help him by communicating with each other, MMA staff & faculty, but especially with Gy Ski.
