General Services Course Descriptions

SAT Preparation - SAT Preparation is a one-semester course unique to the Marine Military Academy. It affords a Cadet the opportunity to improve his college entrance exam scores while at the same time beginning the process of college selection and application. The course focuses on a combination of direct instruction and computer practice dominated by practice testing, analysis, and follow-up drills. It includes a placement test and vocabulary study in an individualized program, plus the time to create a personal file with a resume, an autobiography, at least one college essay, and college information charts for universities of interest to the Cadet. Cadets in this class also have the opportunity to visit the resources in the College Placement Office and have one-on-one counseling with the College Placement Counselor.

Aerospace I - Aerospace I is a year-long ground school course that prepares the Cadet to take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private Pilot Written Exam. Aerospace I also helps prepare the Cadet for the FAA Private Pilot Practical Exam by thoroughly teaching the Cadet all of the knowledge requited for a private pilot's license. The course utilizes the Jeppesen Private Pilot Training book kit. While flying is not required for Aerospace I, two to four flights per semester are suggested in support of classroom instruction.

Aerospace II - Aerospace II is an active, hands-on flight program leading to the FAA Private Pilot single engine license. The Cadet will be training in either a Cessna 172 or a Cessna 152 training aircraft. The Private Pilot training is provided by Gulf Aviation of Harlingen, Texas. Computer Science - This two semester course introduces Cadets to the logical and structural concepts of computer programming using JAVA. This course helps Cadets develop and reinforce logical thinking and manipulative skills, problem solving, program development, and effective use of computer hardware. A strong understanding in math is required for successful completion. No previous experience in computer programming is required or assumed, but the successful completion of Algebra I is a prerequisite.

Business Computer Programming I - This one semester course is designed to introduce Cadets to database programming and development. Cadets will become familiar with database design, development, architecture and integration with Macros using Visual Basic Application Programming. No previous experience in Visual Basic programming is required, but the successful completion of CIS II (computer applications) is a prerequisite.

Business Computer Programming II - This one semester course is designed to introduce Cadets to programming using Visual Basic. In addition, Cadets will learn how Visual Basic can be used to tailor typical business programs for enhanced performance and increased value for specific applications. No previous experience in computer programming is required, but the successful completion of BCIS (computer applications) is a prerequisite.

Business Computer Applications - In this one-semester course Cadets apply the proper touch-system technique to input data when using the computer. Cadets apply word processing technology in order to format and print documents such as personal and business letters, memos, short reports.

Business Computer Informations Systems - BCIS is a one-semester course in the introductory use of computer applications for College and Business . Through skill building and problem solving, Cadets acquire a good working knowledge of a suite of business programs used to record, store, retrieve and present information. Placed in real world and simulated situations, Cadets learn to create professional documents, spreadsheets, databases and computer presentations. Accelerated Cadets will be afforded the opportunity to become a certified Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) in one or more areas of concentration. Business Computer Applications (BCA) is a prerequisite.

Health - Health teaches Cadets how taking responsibility for their own health has a positive effect not only on themselves but also on those around them. The course offers a comprehensive study of the body and its parts and an explanation of the interdependence of its systems. It also develops the decision-making skills necessary to maintain a healthy body.

Desktop Publishing - Desktop Publishing uses PageMaker for electronic publishing and advertising graphics in the production of the Pass in Review, MMA's school yearbook. Cadets strengthen their writing skills while learning photography, page layout and design, business, and professionalism. Publishing experiences in this class give Cadets marketable job skills.

Photography - This course is designed to meet university visual and performing arts requirements. Traditional photography, digital photography, and photo editing will be covered.
