Courage

"It was high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, 'always do what you are afraid to do."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Courage is being scared to death—but saddling up anyway."
John Wayne

Courage is doing what you know is right, even in the face of almost overwhelming fear or peer pressure. Courage can be purely a matter of Character, as in saying "No" when asked to do something you know is wrong. Courage can be a matter of Leadership, taking the men under your command through a dangerous situation because you know it must be done. Courage is doing the right thing in spite of taunts, peer disapproval, or physical danger. And it is true courage when you are doing the right thing, and know one will ever know what you have done.

Courage, both physical and moral, are basic tenets of the United Stares Marine Corps and we use the skills and years of experience of the Marines to gradually show a Cadet that true Courage can be found in everyone. Helping a young man climb another foot on the climbing wall, just one more foot, is a test of courage that many young men never have the opportunity to experience. Step-by-step, the Cadet is led through physical exercises and challenges that help him expand his "comfort zone". He engages in classes where the philosophy of Leadership and Character are discussed in real world situations. The exercises help him become aware of the physical power he possesses and his control over his body. In many classes he is chosen to take command, to lead a team, to be challenged in ways both physical and mental. This assists in developing his sense of self reliance and his reliance upon his fellow team members. Loyalty and responsibility toward the team, Character and Spirituality building tasks and classes, all work in developing both physical and moral courage in the Cadet. And Courage will be there when needed as a Man.

We know that young men today are constantly in a state of temptation, of losing out on the future for the limited present. Courage isn't just seen in winning a battle, but often, only need exist in the word "no". Courage isn't only a physical response, but can be mental and moral in nature. We dedicate ourselves to assisting our Cadets in developing the moral courage to resist that which is harmful, to stand on their own rather than give in to peer pressure, and develop the Courage to accept the challenges that will make their future a success, no matter where it may lead.

"Courage is the first of all the virtues because if you haven't courage, you may not have the opportunity to use any of the others."
Dr. Samuel Johnson
