Self-Discipline

"Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power."
Lao Tzu

"Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
Mark Twain

Everyone thinks at one time or another, "I just don't feel like doing that today..." Many feel like sloughing off now and again on a job, of putting off doing something that should be done today. Of sleeping in rather than getting things done because you just feel low today. In these instances Self-Discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of how you feel. At other times, you may want to do something that you shouldn't. You may want to use information from the internet in a report and pretend it's your work. Or, to leave work early when no one would know. Self-Discipline is knowing that you are never in that situation. You are always there. You will always know. That is why it is called SELF-Discipline.

At MMA, we are dedicated to developing Self-Discipline in our Cadets. In the physical challenges they will meet, someone is always there, watching, helping, with a hand or a word, showing the Cadet how to succeed. They are also there to catch them, to point out where they took the wrong route, made the wrong choice; training the Cadet how to make decisions so that when no one is there to catch them, they will make the right choice. Self-Discipline is also instilled in the Cadet through the use of Military Courtesy, of training them that all the members of their team deserve a courteous response, not anger. That controlling one's emotions can make it unnecessary to control one's physical reaction to a challenge.

We realize that the safety of our Cadets and, often, the safety of the Cadet's team, is a matter of Self-Discipline. Proper use of Self-Discipline promotes Courtesy, Self-Reliance, and a sense of Dignity. These traits result in a response of Team Values and Loyalty. These are traits that are valued throughout life, on the field of battle, or in a corporate boardroom.
