The Marine Military Academy’s English as a Second Language program is a four-week total immersion experience that provides educational, cultural and athletic opportunities to boys between the ages of 12 to 17, and age 18 if not graduated from high school, who are non-native speakers of English.
Our ESL program is open to students from other countries at all levels of English proficiency. Since the program uses only English, native speakers of any language can benefit.
During the day, ESL students attend classes taught by experienced MMA foreign language, English and math teachers in which they learn to speak, read and write contemporary American English through an integrated lesson plan that makes use of audiovisual and computer resources.
The program teaches students the practical vocabulary necessary so that they can be successful cadets at MMA during the academic year. To ensure students are progressing as expected, weekly proficiency exams are given.
After school, students participate in the same kinds of activities enjoyed by our summer campers, focusing on sports and physical fitness in a military environment. Field trips to cultural and sports events and local points of interest give the boys practice in using English in a practical environment.
The most advanced students from the group are invited to apply to MMA for the academic year.
