Responsibility

"The first step to truly living a good and fearless life, is accepting responsibility for your actions. Accepting what part you had in any situation. Difficult, to say the least, but liberating."
Jann Arden

"Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses."
George Washington Carver

Personal growth is the outcome of realizing that we make mistakes and learning from them. You cannot grow by denying the responsibility of your actions; you cannot grow by not taking action. And, mistakes cannot be made unless you are in a position of responsibility. How often is a child in public school placed in positions where action and responsibility are required?

At MMA, Cadets are routinely placed in circumstances where their actions have results, both for themselves and for their group or team. To be made the "leader" in a class exercise. To have to make the decisions in physically and mentally challenging exercises where their ability to think outside the box, make swift decisions and depend upon their classmates, puts them in roles where responsibility drops upon their shoulders. When the plan fails, when things don't work out the way one hopes, we work with the Cadets; showing them failure is a growth-enabling tool. Giving a young man responsibility over other Cadets awakens an understanding of leadership. For that day, for that hour, for that exercise, those Cadets are "your" men, and you bear the burden of responsibility. Maturity and leadership follow in turn.

We know that responsibility yields self-control, commitment, discipline and loyalty to one's team. These traits will be there long after our Cadets leave our school. But the results of our school will never leave our Cadets.

"You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself."
Jim Rohn
