Leadership

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."
John Quincy Adams

"The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say 'I.' And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say 'I.' They don't think 'I.' They think 'we'; they think 'team.' They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but 'we' gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done."
Peter Drucker

What is a leader? What makes one man capable of leadership, and another not? Leaders are not born, men are born. Leaders are created from men by training, by trial, and by having the circumstances of leadership thrust upon them. Many men find themselves in those circumstances, those that become leaders have been trained to take advantage of circumstance, to control the moment, to present the goal of effort in such a way that those who must follow can see clearly what was not visible before. And, once presented, once shown, they will follow, they will invest themselves in this common vision for the common good. This good may be the good of the team, the good of the community, the good of the corporation, or the good of the country.

At MMA, we know what has always been known by the United States Marine Corps. With the proper training, with the proper role models, with the proper attention to the "whole man", any man can be capable of becoming a leader of men. We give every cadet the opportunity, the training and the experience of being a Leader. Every cadet, from the exuberant type-A personality to the quiet, shy boy lacking confidence, is given the opportunity to lead the team in physical and mental challenges. Everyone has the chance to reach and extend their limits. The result is a team where everyone knows they had a chance, no one held them down, that, if needed, and they are ready to Lead.

Leadership is central to our purpose and goal at MMA. The standards and values of the United States Marine Corps have served as an example of the best methods of creating leaders. Why else does the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania work with the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia to to provide training in leadership development for Wharton MBA and Executive MBA students?

"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit."
Albert Schweitzer
