Student Activities

"MMA is a community for learning and growth. One rarely encounters a school where every person involved with the students believes so passionately in their potential and in working together to assist them in developing that potential. It has been an honor to know so many dedicated Marines and to experience the esprit de corps that they share and that is an integral part of MMA. It is inspiring to realize that although I have never been a Marine, our Marine DIs and administrators accept and cooperate with me and my colleagues to achieve the goals we hold in common for the young men who are entrusted to us."
Dr. Mary E. Ricciardi , Department Chair of Foreign Language, Marine Military Academy

Among the many organized activities available to Cadets are the Band, Color Guard, Drill Team, Climbing Club, Chess Club, Science Club, Mariners Club, Photography Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, KEY Club, Rotary Interact, 8th grade intramurals, National Honor Society, Rifle Team, Boy Scouts, Weight Lifting, and Yearbook.

Academy varsity teams compete against other area private and public schools in football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, tennis, soccer, swimming, physical fitness training, wrestling, boxing, and marksmanship. Intramural competition for eighth graders is offered in basketball, volleyball, track, soccer, and softball. The South Texas weather allows Cadets to participate in outdoor athletics and activities the entire year.

The Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets is very active within the Harlingen community. Each year the Academy Boy Scout troop has completed several Eagle Scout projects in the local community. The Cadets support the annual Relay for Life and are contributors to the United Way Fund Drive each year. United Blood Services holds blood drives at the Academy each year and Cadets always donate freely. The Academy Key Club and Rotary Interact Clubs are also active in community service projects and the Corps of Cadets support the 'Texas Adopt A Beach Cleanup' each year. The Corps of Cadets sponsors an annual Christmas party for local children and the local community routinely attends many of the parades by the Corps of Cadets.

Various social events, including the Birthday Ball, are held during the school year and the Academy sponsors several dances each year at the Cadet Activities Center. Local high school girls routinely attend these events which are closely chaperoned. After their first four weeks of training, Cadets that are eligible for liberty are allowed to visit Harlingen on Saturday afternoons and evenings, and on Sundays. Overnight liberty is granted for Saturdays with written parental permission if the Cadet is in satisfactory academic standing.
