Foreign Languages Department
Focus
Aware that our Cadets live in a global society, and that the study of other languages and cultures can better prepare them to meet the challenges of the world around them, we dedicate ourselves to building not only linguistic skills but also understanding of the peoples whose languages we teach. In so doing, we give our Cadets training in linguistic analysis and comparison that will enable them to explore other new languages as their horizons expand.
Marine Military Academy requires a two-year sequence in French, Spanish or Chinese. Advanced courses are offered as electives and are encouraged for college-bound students. MMA’s language programs focus on mastery of vocabulary and structures and practical, proficient use of language in realistic settings. Cadets use a state-of-the-art computer laboratory to reinforce their classroom learning, participate in regional and national language competitions, and take field trips to points of cultural interest. Courses at the advanced level are taught as Honors courses and may offer opportunities for dual credit at local colleges or placement credit through the SAT-2.
